My guess is that somebody (either at Cartoon Network or IDW, whichever) looked over at My Little Pony and got jealous. MLP has hordes of younger fans AND hordes of adult fans (bronies.) From my limited perspective as a humble comic shop clerk, the bronies aren’t as numerous as the little kids, but the broneis buy A TON of merchandise, pretty much anything you slap a Rainbow Dash picture on, they’ll buy. (That trend has been slowing down lately, but for awhile there, yeah.) Anyway, somebody wanted that double revenue stream, but instead of leaving the sexualization of their characters to the creepier corners of the internet and just turning a blind eye to it, they tipped their hand by slapping a sexualized cover on an official product.

I feel this is what happened as well. It’s a very sloppy decision. It’s not how you do business, especially when children are concerned and a really iconic property, which could be bringing in so much money in various forms. Rather than benching it for so many years. Whoever is their strategist should be fired.
